Mike johnson set to take fight for speakership to house floor amid GOP leadership crisis

In a high-stakes showdown for the House speakership, Representative Mike Johnson is ready to take his fight to the House floor on Wednesday. This pivotal moment for House Republicans unfolds amidst uncertainty surrounding whether the Louisiana lawmaker can secure the 217 votes required to clinch the gavel.

Johnson, serving as the House GOP conference vice chairman, emerged as the nominee for the speakership late on a tumultuous Tuesday evening. The day itself was marked by chaos, commencing with the selection of Minnesota Representative Tom Emmer as the party's nominee. However, Emmer's rapid withdrawal mere hours later followed staunch resistance from the right-wing faction of the conference and a rebuke from former President Donald Trump. The day concluded with a vote to designate a new nominee, with Johnson ultimately prevailing.

The GOP conference finds itself under mounting pressure as the House remains paralyzed in the absence of a speaker. However, House Republicans have grappled with a formidable challenge in rallying behind a successor to Kevin McCarthy, who experienced an unprecedented ouster. The vote to remove McCarthy from his leadership role plunged the House into uncharted waters, casting uncertainty over the prospect of any candidate securing the speakership in the aftermath of this groundbreaking development.

In the wake of the nomination vote, House Republicans conducted another crucial vote to assess the nominee's support within the conference. With approximately 20 members absent during this vote, and considering that Johnson can only afford to lose four votes on the floor, uncertainty looms over whether he can amass the requisite votes to claim the gavel.

"Democracy is messy sometimes, but it is our system," emphasized Johnson on Tuesday evening. "The intention is to go to the House floor tomorrow and make this official. So we will be doing that."

Emmer's exit from the race marked the third instance of a Republican nominee stepping down after failing to secure the necessary votes to assume the speakership. Previously, Representatives Jim Jordan of Ohio and Steve Scalise of Louisiana faced similar fates.

Emmer's nomination faced rapid opposition from the right-wing faction of his conference and a forceful rebuke from former President Trump. In a post on Truth Social, Trump branded Emmer a "Globalist RINO" and declared that voting for him "would be a tragic mistake."
