Boygenius Trio Reflects on Six Grammy Nominations: 'Tripling the Joy'

The members of Boygenius, fresh off the news of their six Grammy nominations, are gearing up for an exhilarating weekend that includes a performance on "Saturday Night Live." In a Zoom session from New York, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus shared their excitement about the overwhelming love they've received from the Recording Academy.

"I don't know how to respond to it," admits Julien Baker. "It's just happened. I'm overwhelmed... but stoked," she adds with enthusiasm.

For Phoebe Bridgers, who experienced four Grammy nods as a solo artist three years ago, this year's increased nominations bring added joy as she shares the recognition with her Boygenius bandmates. "It's triple the joy, right?" Bridgers remarks, expressing genuine happiness for her fellow musicians.

Reflecting on her past Grammy experience during the challenging 2020-21 cycle, Bridgers notes the contrast. "It was during COVID when I was nominated, and this is so much more celebratory. I was pretty traumatized last time, and the only way I felt it was on the phone. So it's already way more fun to find out in a room full of people and be celebrating."

As they prepare for their "SNL" appearance, Bridgers acknowledges the nerves but anticipates a positive outcome. "If it went fine, we're happy," she says, emphasizing the affirmative response to the band's popularity.

Addressing the timing of their "SNL" booking, Lucy Dacus responds with dry humor, suggesting the talent team booked them because they genuinely believe in the group's talent.

While the group remains tight-lipped about their "SNL" performance, Bridgers teases, "You should be excited. I want you to write about it as someone surprised by it because I'm curious what your take is. It's not that crazy, but I think you'll like it."

With six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Alternative Album for "The Record," Boygenius is set to make a mark in various categories. Their song "Not Strong Enough" is nominated for Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance, and Best Rock Song, while the ballad "Cool About It" is up for Best Alternative Performance. Additionally, the "Record" album has a nomination for Best Engineered Album, and Bridgers earned a seventh nomination for her featured appearance on SZA's "Ghost in the Machine" in the Pop Duo/Group Performance category.
