Kingsley Wheaton, the Chief Strategy and Growth Officer at British American Tobacco (Reynolds' parent company), expressed their dissatisfaction with the FDA's decision and announced their intent to challenge it in court.
"We believe appropriately regulated flavored vaping products — including menthol — are critical in supporting adult smokers migrate from combustible cigarettes," Wheaton stated in a news release. This statement underscores the industry's perspective that these products can serve as a harm reduction tool.
Popularity Amongst Youth
Vuse Alto menthol e-cigarettes, on the market for several years, have gained substantial popularity among children and teenagers. According to the results of a federal survey published in 2022, nearly 13% of middle- and high-school students who reported vaping in the past 30 days identified Vuse as their preferred brand, second only to Puff Bar. This alarming trend has raised concerns about the accessibility and appeal of these products to underage users.
Ongoing Legal Battles
The FDA's ban on Vuse Alto menthol e-cigarettes is not the first of its kind. Last year, the FDA ordered Juul Labs to halt the sale of its vaping products due to concerns about youth vaping.
