The women's freeride movement has been gaining remarkable momentum in recent years. Events such as Proving Grounds, Darkfest, and Formation have been instrumental in promoting women's categories in the world of freeriding. However, the absence of a women's category at this year's Red Bull Rampage has sparked frustration among female freeriders.

Formation: Pioneering the Women's Freeride Movement

Formation, an event that made its debut in 2019, played a pivotal role in propelling the women's freeride movement forward. In its early years, only a handful of riders in Virgin explored the challenging terrain, pushing their limits to uncover new possibilities. As the event evolved in 2021 and 2022, so did the riders' capabilities. By the end of the 2022 event, several riders had successfully rebuilt and completed full runs on the old Rampage lines.

The Frustration of Cancellation

In the absence of Formation and without a women's category at Rampage this year, many female freeriders are understandably frustrated. The absence of a platform to showcase their skills at such a prestigious event has left them wanting.

Female Contenders at Rampage

Despite the challenges, several athletes who had participated in or contributed to Formation made the journey to Virgin this year to support the male riders at Rampage. Notable among them are Hannah Bergemann, Robin Goomes, and Cami Nogueira.

Hannah Bergemann: A veteran of Formation, Hannah expressed her excitement at being present to support the male riders at Rampage. She emphasized the incredible experience of witnessing the event in person. This year's Rampage venue is the same location used for Formation in 2021. While certain features, like Brendan Fairclough's canyon gap, do not interest her, there are other features that align perfectly with her riding style.

Robin Goomes: Robin had never been to Rampage before but worked as a digger during the year Formation took place at this venue. The opportunity to watch Rampage in person has been a dream come true for her. Robin drew inspiration from the lines created at the venue this year.

Cami Nogueira: Like Bergemann, Nogueira is experiencing Rampage for the first time. She has ridden this venue and found inspiration in the new features constructed. However, she has no intention of tackling Brendan Fairclough's line. Nogueira shared that she's learned a lot by observing the male riders construct and assess features this week.

The Hope for 2024

All three riders remain hopeful about participating in the event in 2024. However, they acknowledge the importance of open communication with Red Bull to ensure that the inclusion of women in Rampage is a well-thought-out and seamless process. Bergemann stressed that understanding the expectations for their participation and being on the same page is vital. Adequate time for logistical and skill preparation is also crucial.

While an invitation to Rampage would be a dream come true for Nogueira, she envisions another year of Formation as a key component of her preparation. According to her, Formation is crucial for the sport's progression and women's participation.

A Collective Emphasis on Progression

All three riders emphasize the importance of collaboration with event organizers to ensure that the inclusion of women at Rampage is executed in a way that promotes and supports the progression of women's freeriding.

The absence of a women's category at this year's Red Bull Rampage has sparked frustration among female freeriders. Despite the setback, three talented female riders, Hannah Bergemann, Robin Goomes, and Cami Nogueira, continue to inspire and aspire. They hope to see women competing at Rampage in 2024 and are dedicated to working with organizers to ensure the inclusion of women is well-executed.
