Winter Skin Protection: The Ultimate Guide to SPF
Winter Skin Protection: The Ultimate Guide to SPF
A daily SPF during the winter months to protect from the UVA rays is a must, says Lucia Ferrari
Let's address a vital question - what's the one product that instantly starts working, keeps your skin youthful, shields you from wrinkles and skin cancer, yet is often overlooked during the gloomy winter months? That, my friends, is sunscreen.
While many of us diligently apply sunscreen beneath our makeup in the summer, our commitment often wavers when the temperatures drop, and the skies turn gray. We wonder, is it truly necessary on a dull and rainy day?
The answer is a resounding yes. Consultant dermatologist Dr. Hiva Fassihi emphasizes that while UVB rays, responsible for sunburn and skin cancer, are more prevalent in summer, UVA rays, which contribute to skin aging, are ever-present, even on cloudy days. Moreover, UV rays can penetrate glass windows, leaving you unprotected when driving or sitting next to a window.
SPF will keep skin looking younger and healthier than any other product on the market |
Protecting yourself from skin cancer requires vigilance during the summer, with at least SPF 30. However, if you're also invested in maintaining your skin's appearance, a daily SPF during winter to guard against UVA rays is a must.
This is especially crucial if you're among those willing to invest in expensive face serums, retinol products to reduce wrinkles, address midlife rosacea, and achieve a velvety glow. But all of this is futile without the addition of SPF to your daily routine.
Most dermatologists recommend using your preferred skincare products, such as serums, retinol, or night creams, at night. During the day, swap your regular moisturizer for an SPF. You can also apply an antioxidant serum in the morning, followed by a good SPF.
Over the years, I've tried various SPF consistencies, and I've compiled a list of products that work well as day creams, even for my dehydrated midlife skin. The ones listed below are also effective as makeup primers and won't cause pilling when you apply foundation or tinted moisturizer.
The amount of SPF applied is another critical factor. Dr. Hiva Fassihi emphasizes that people rarely apply a thick enough layer. Ideally, it should be about 2mm thick, but most use only a quarter of that amount. When in doubt, be more generous. If possible, apply the SPF and allow it to soak in for five minutes before applying makeup, especially if you haven't used enough in the first place.
To echo the words I once told Sister Finigan, my geography teacher many years ago, "I will try harder."
